Chapter Seven

Eureka Point, California

I sobbed like a baby, on the verge of hysteria, until I came to my senses, realizing I could be wasting valuable time. Grabbing my cell phone, I called the last number in my phone’s memory, which was the hospital’s main number. I reached a receptionist at the main desk and asked to speak with Mr. Owens in room one-twenty-one. The receptionist put me on hold. She came back on the line a few moments later and told me Mr. Owens had been moved to a semi-private room earlier that evening. She would connect me to his new room.

It was possible whoever called me may have done so from the room Tom had been in after they moved him to his new room. I remembered it was possible for someone to find out the last number that had been called from a particular phone. Whoever contacted me was someone who was looking for me, and they were getting way too close. I shuddered at the thought of some sleazy underworld tough guy sent by the drug cartel to find me and do me in. Or, just as bad or worse, it could be Craig, furiously hunting me down.

I was relieved to hear Tom’s voice when he answered the phone. After I finished explaining what had happened, he asked me some questions in rapid succession: Where was I? Was the alarm on? Who, if anyone, had I given my cell phone number to? After I answered his questions he gave me explicit instructions. He told me to turn my cell phone off and to use his instead, the one I had brought home with me from the hospital after the accident. I was to screen every call and only answer if it was Tom himself or McClintock. He would call McClintock and let him know what had happened. Tom assured me it was not possible for someone to find out my location from my cell phone number unless it had a tracking device installed, which mine did not.

Tom made me feel better, but before our conversation ended he asked me if I had any experience using a handgun. “A gun? Heck no, I never needed to carry a gun before,” I said hesitantly.

“Well, there’s a first time for everything. You probably won’t need to use it, but you should know how to, just in case,” Tom urged.

Because I had no real experience with a gun, Tom gave me a crash course on the basics over the phone and then told me there was a loaded handgun with the safety on in the bottom drawer of the dressing table in my bedroom.

“Lizzie, be careful, stay in the house with the alarm system on, and keep away from the windows. I don’t want to scare you. But we do need to take every precaution. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Tom. I’ll stay put here and not go anywhere until I leave to pick you up tomorrow.”

“Good girl. See you tomorrow.”

After we ended
